Breakthrough Secrets Podcast: The History of Weight Lifting With Jamie Lewis
Over the last couple of months, I’ve filmed a 30 for 30 that will air next year on ESPN (in a sleeveless shirt, but as a historian rather than an athlete) and done a couple of rad podcasts, both of which dropped yesterday in a bizarre synchronicity. In this hour long episode I discussed the history of weightlifting, which I am now pegging with the birth year of 1848 for reasons you likely already understand but if you don’t, all it will take is opening your earholes for 59 minutes of Jamie-filled joy.
If you want to know exactly what was discussed, here’s the episode description- and although you guys might be aware of how much I’ve hated doing podcasts in the past, I really enjoyed my discussions with both podcasts, so that will likely become a semi-regular occurrence (though until someone approaches me with a staff of some kind, I’m not even discussing attempting to do another one myself). In other words, you will be seeing and hearing a lot more of me in the future (including the occasional cameo on a Vice reality show called The Joint, which features the weed church where I bounce the door a couple of times a week, and two horror movies filming in August).
A synopsis of the episode follows, but while you’re skimming and clicking and shit, be sure to follow these guys on the Gram, FB, and Spotify or wherever you listen to podcasts!

Fuck yes dude.
What books on the Huns and Mongols do you recommend?
The only book I can name off the top of my head is dated as fuck- all of our understanding of history and archaeology has changed dramatically in the last 10-20 years with genetics. The Empire of the Steppes by Rene Grousset is the gold standard as far as central asian horse nomad history though- just be aware some of the information has changed, as we were all previously limited to 4th century and later sources.
Congrats Jamie! Looking forward to it.
Powerlifting is easy? What makes you say that. Easy until you cannot lift the weight. 100metre sprinting is easy. Until you try and beat the world record. I think that there is just too much self congratulating going on from Jamie. Maybe it is a yankee thing, they are encouraged to sing their own praises. Maybe it is the magic pills, Sure everything muscle and strength related when you are on the roids. Don’t give us all that rubbish about roids helping a little etc. Why take them then? Roids are magic. Its like injecting liquid tonnage. Its not that you are special, you have a special warrior mind set, it’s steroids. They work. The warrior mind set comes in when the doc tells you you are going to die from your steroid addiction.
Hahahahahahaha. Thanks for chiming in, poser. Maybe you ought to do more daytrading while screeching about your alleged love of Communism. The only shit you believe in is weakness, hypocrisy, being disingenuous, and endless repetition of tired and outdated tropes.
He still loves me! I am more of a swing trader. As a good communist I will give you a free tip – go long on gold miners.
