Exercises You’ve Never Tried Before: Swingers

He’s not gonna call her.

You’ve all seen the movie, and you can all quote it ad nauseam.  Luckily, this blog entry’s not about swing dancing, as i’ve not got a zoot suit and have no interest in conducting ballroom dancing acrobatics while listening to the soothing sounds of notable musicians like the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies.  Instead, this entry is about an exercise I started doing because I enjoyed it far more than Gibbon pullups- Swingers.

I think I just found my new gym.

Doing this exercise is pretty simple- you do a regular pullup, release the bar with one hand, swing out as far as you can, and then swing back, grab the bar, and do another.  To increase the level of difficulty, you can change your grip from supinated to pronated, which will shift the emphasis of the movement slightly and increase the difficulty of the movement considerably.

Shortly after you start trying these things, you’ll understand why I do them.  They’re fun as hell, you get to swing around like a fucking chimp by one hand, and you radically increase your grip strength.  I’d venture to guess they’ll help your regular pullup, as well, and at the very least will provide you with one more exercise with which to allay any boredom you might have when you’re hitting the gym 5+ times a week.

Start swingin’, because they’re money and you don’t even know it yet.

Looks like fun. Going back and forth across the monkey bars in any playground is good too. Go as many times as you can, forwards, backwards, sideways, whatever, until your grip gives out.

Off topic, but are you getting any more XL shirts in anytime soon?

Disappointed by the form you showed in the video above, as a regular reader of your blog I thought it would have just been … different.

Why not go into a full dead hang at the bottom of the pullup position?

Any aversion to bringing your chest all the way to the bar, or slowing your eccentric repetition at all?

it does start from a hang

…..you can tell by all the one arm hanging going on

Because perfect form is the number one priority on this blog and it always has been, right?

So i've been peaking recently at grip strength. and my lifts have stop gaining because of it.

The outside fingers keep failing. and the index fingers keep tearing to shreads even with wraps.

I not familiar with grip work, should i use a lighter weights and somehow focus on pinky fingers.

I'm just confused on what the workout is supposed to be on grip work i don't think im targeting the right muscles.

That exercise looks like it'd help.

Also, f'n excellent article. Your posts are really starting to be a great read, highly educational and entertaining.

"Suck his balls a bit more, Glen…."

You'll visualize that when you blow tonight's load, won't you. Manually, of course, since it's already been established that you can't even talk to a girl. Isn't that right, Porridge?

If Chris D is a regular reader of this blog it makes very little sense to be disappointed by form. You'd think he'd be used to form being kept pretty loose.

Not that it matters. I could have said pretty much anything and the first thing to pop into Porridge's mind would have been a man sucking another man's balls. He probably thinks about that a couple of times a day.

… I'm still trying to figure out what the fuck Chris D is babbling about. My arms are completely straight at the bottom of every rep.

Apparently that arm work you barely do works, because your arms are thick enough to have the "I'm bending them" illusion where they just look slightly bent all the time.

Rejuv, your grip works out your forearms. Start by doing overhand deadlifts–you will have to cut back weight to get heavy with these–and then do plate curls and shit. The payoff will be worth it, and very soon.

Hey Jamie, I sent you email a week ago. Just worried if it has been lost in the Internet. What the hell, I could just ask you the same thing here: When doing keto / paleo where do I get enough dietary fiber (at least 30 g)?

    Thank you!

Ever try doing a chin, then letting it down with one-hand? One-hand negatives or some shit like that; anyway, give it a try. Murder on the shoulder, but fun anyway, and apparently how some skinny bastards work up to one hand chins.

  20. Jamie Lewis Avatar

I can actually do one hand chins. The things to which you're referring are gibbon pullups. I just prefer these, since they're a bit more fun.

Lol, that exercise makes you look like a retarded Chimpanzee.

I'm gonna go to the gym and try them out now, thanks.

On the philosophy of training every day – Norman Mailer believed writing had to be done every day, otherwise “it was like leaving soldiers out in the rain.” He said you couldn’t tell yourself you were going to do it and then not do it, that it was a “disservice to the subconscious.”

Jamie put a video of you doing one arm chins, and some training info on how to achieve them without injuring yourself

  26. Glen MacCharles Avatar

The best thing I ever did for my grip, as far as deadlifts are concerned, was high-rep stiff-legged deadlifts three times a week. My heaviest deadlift ever was after doing that for quite a few months.

There's not set way to achieving the one-arm chin, if you're able to do more than 12 chin-ups try experimenting with negative one-arm chins or assisted one-arm chins.

    Fucking three times a week.

I think I'll do it four times a week just to piss off Brooks Kubik one day.

Some weeks he only trained twice.

I cannot see why Jamie even likes his book, this guy hated training.

Thanks, pete n glen. Ya i'll minus the straps and try out some stiff leg work this week.

  34. Jamie Lewis Avatar

I'll do a one-arm chin blog at some point- they're really not a mainstay of my workout, and I've not done them regularly since I lived in Austria..

  35. Christine Avatar

I liked snowballing. Now i have aids.

  36. Glen MacCharles Avatar

The best thing i ever did for my grip, as far as deadlifts are concerned, was high rep wanking off.

  37. Simon Adebisi Avatar

Austria! Well, then. G'day mate! Let's put another shrimp on the barbie!

  38. Glen MacCharles Avatar

High rep wanking off never did much for my grip. Of course, that's a workout I didn't stick with for as long as you did, Porridge. While you were reading books about how to hit on girls, I was getting laid.

Why does everyone love pullups so much?
I mean, they're great, but I don't care if you can pull your bodyweight up if you can clean or deadlift a huge amount of weight.
I don't even think 'old timers' messed with pullups that much. I could be wrong, though.
Again, I have no problem with pullups, but people seem to go nuts over them…

  40. Paul Vanzavelberg Avatar

Add huge amount of weight (well, for a pullup) on a belt/backpack and do them then.

  41. Jamie Lewis Avatar

Insofar as I know, old timers did a shitload of gymnastics movements. As such, I'd imagine they did pullups as a matter of course.

Strong Dumb and Dumber reference, Simon.
