If I were starting out again, I would never use a barbell, I would avoid lifting sports, concentrate purely on bodybuilding with cables and dumbbells, and even the dumbbells I might ditch. We ae brainwashed into thinking that plates on a bar = muscle on the body, but it is not the case. Best book on bodybuilding I ever read is “The Physics of Resistance Exercise” Doug Brignole. Despite my almost non-existent knowledge of physics prior to reading, it slapped me round the face and kicked my ass. Everything I thought I knew was suboptimal, pointlessly risky. No longer do I worship at the altar of squat bench dead bent over row chins dips ohp. I think Doug is Vince Gironda 2.0, what Gironda tried to do but failed, Brignole nails.
That is an interesting take but as someone who trains at home it’s much easier and cheaper to get a barbell and some weights than try and put together a cable workout system
No longer does I worship at the altar of squat bench dead bent over row chins dips ohp curl pushup lunge skullcrusher calf raise sit up leg raise shrug farmers carry stone load sledgehammer kettlebell or the pathetic sandbag! All pare in comparison to the cable crossover! ALL HAIL THE ALMIGHTY PULLEY!!
Spot on! Seriously, depends what you want. I think there are two elements at play. One is sport, one is physical development. Not the same thing, some overlap, but if you are just looking for muscular development, a good cable set up is all you need. Doug Brignole for the win, king of training.
